AVG and Security Essentials

Dear Computer Lady,

I am having a problem I was wondering if you can run Microsoft Essential and AVG at the same time on a computer.

I know you can not run AVG and McAfee or Norton on the same computer.

My computer is a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3

Thank you for your help, Palmer

Dear Palmer,

You cannot run Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG on your computer at the same time.

Both of these programs are antivirus programs. When you run two antivirus programs at the same time, they will either create conflicts that will crash your machine, or they will cancel each other out and leave holes in your security that will result in your computer becoming infected.

If it was my computer, I would remove the Security Essentials and install AVG Internet Security 2012.

I have been using AVG for many years now, and have never become infected with any viruses or malware.

Elizabeth

I do not know much about computers so I have to rely on others that do. AVG has not been the recommended anti virus program for a long time. Too much malware/spyware, etc. I used it for years and didn’t have a problem, nor did I want one so I went to Microsft Essentials and I have used that for quite a while but now that one has slipped among those that know and used to recommend. So I’m looking around again. Just my 2¢ worth.

    Hi,
Can you tell me how to delete Microsoft Sec essentials? It’s not in my programs or in the control panel. I have Vista Home Premium and am using AVG free 2012 which I have used for 4 or 5 years.(love this) I just noticed the email from the women who has it on her computer and is having problems running both. I didn’t realize I was running both and shouldn’t be. My computer has been freezing lately and this may be why. I want to keep AVG. Thank you, love your site and have been reading for years!
