Hello Elizabeth,

Enjoy your site very much. Your information is priceless. I use bookmarks extensively and it occurred to me, if chrome crashes all those sites are not backed up. How can I store them on my external drive? I have win XP and use google chrome.

Thank You, Sam from Berwick Me

Dear Sam,

There are actually a couple of ways that you can backup your Google Chrome Bookmarks.

If you have a Google account, you can set them up to automatically sync to your Google account. The advantage to doing it this way, is that you can use Chrome on more than one computer and have access to all your bookmarks. Here is how to set this up:

1. Open Google Chrome and click on the “Wrench” icon in the upper-right corner of the window.

2. Click on “Options” in the drop down menu.

3. A “Settings” window will appear in the main Chrome window. Click on “Personal Stuff” in the left column.

4. In the “Sign In” section, click the “Sign In” button and enter your Google account email address and password.

5. Click the button that says, “OK, sync everything”.

Repeat the steps above on each computer that you want to sync your bookmarks to.

The other way to backup your bookmarks in Google Chrome is to export them to someplace like the external drive you mentioned. Here is how to do that:

1. Open Google Chrome and click on the “Wrench” icon in the upper-right corner of the window.

2. Point to “Bookmarks” in the drop down menu, then click on “Bookmark Manager” in the sub-menu.

3. In the Bookmark Manager page, click the “Organize” menu, then click “Export Bookmarks to HTML File…”

4. A “Save As” dialog box will open. Just select the location you want to save the backup file, then click on the “Save” button.

Elizabeth

Dear Kathy,

Adobe flash player is free to download and install from Adobe’s web site. Here is how:

1. Open Internet Explorer and go to www.adobe.com

2. In the “Download” column on the right, click on “Adobe Flash Player”

I have no idea what happened to it.

Thank you, Darnel

Dear Darnel,

There are two ways to display the menu bar in Internet Explorer.

The quick and temporary way is to simply press the “Alt” key on your keyboard. This will display the menu bar, and once you have used it, it will go back into hiding untilyou press the “Alt” key again.

The second way, is to turn on the Menu bar. Here are the directions for doing that.

1. Press the “Alt” key on your keyboard to display the menu bar.

2. In the menu bar, click on “View”, then point to “Toolbars” and finally, click on “Menu Bar”.

This will display the menu bar all the time.

Hope this helps, Elizabeth

I have a laptop with vista.

How do I delete a bookmarked site?

Bob

Dear Bob,

A bookmark is simply a shortcut to a website that you can create in your web browser to make it easier to return to that website in the future.

I was going to assume that you are using Internet Explorer (IE) as your web browser, but IE does not call them bookmarks, instead it calls them “Favorites”.

Both Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome call them bookmarks, so I am guessing you are using one of those browsers.

Before I start with directions of how to remove a bookmark, I just want to clarify one thing. You can delete a bookmark that you made to a site, but you can’t delete the site itself. It will still be out there on the internet until the owner takes it down.

To remove a bookmark in Google Chrome:

1. Open Chrome
2. Click on the small wrench icon in the upper-right corner of the window.
3. Point to, “Bookmarks” in the drop down menu.
4. Click on “Bookmark Manager” in the sub-menu.
5. Your bookmarks will be displayed in the browser window. Right-click on a bookmark and click “Delete” in the context menu that appears.

To Remove a bookmark in Mozilla FireFox:

1. Open Firefox.
2. Click on the small star icon in the upper-right corner of the window.
3. Click “Show All Bookmarks” in the drop down menu.
4. Find your bookmark, and right click on it.
5. Click “Delete” in the context menu.

To Remove a Favorite in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on the small star icon in the upper-right corner of the window. It is located between a house and gear icon.
3. Click on the “Favorites” tab in the dialog box that appears.
4. Right click on any favorite, and click “Delete” in the context menu.

I have Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium computer. I need help with “InPrivate” browsing. I do not want it and do not know how to stop it.
Dear Mikee,

InPrivate browsing is a feature of Internet Explorer that allows you to use the internet without leaving any traces of where you have been. I find it useful this time of year for those of us who share their computer with loved ones, but don’t want them to see where we have been Christmas shopping online.

Normally, you access InPrivate browsing by clicking on the “Tools” icon (the small gear located just under the right edge of the title bar) point to “Safety” then click on “InPrivate browsing”.

When you open Internet Explorer, however, InPrivate browsing should NOT be the default setting. If it is, chances are that either someone has changed the settings, or somehow the shortcut has become corrupted.

Changing the setting back, however, is not easy and requires that you edit the registry. I don’t recommend that you start editing the registry unless you are comfortable having to re-install Windows if something goes wrong. It would be better to have a local computer technician fix it for you.

Dear Robert,

It is true that some pictures online can contain viruses. Unfortunately, in order for you to see a picture on your computer, you have to download it first, so by the time you see a picture on your browser, if that picture was infected, and your antivirus program didn’t block the virus you are already infected.

Since you have to view a picture in your browser in order to print it, the damage would already be done.

A better suggestion is to make sure you have a good antivirus program installed, and make sure you keep it updated.

Dear Computer Lady;

I have been reading your site for years and it has helped me a great deal. I have been using Outlook for my busy family calendar.

Recently I have purchased an Android Smartphone so I have been enouraged to use Google. I have successfully created a gmail account (I move between USA and UK every couple of years due to job), and I like Google calendar, but I cannot get it to print on one page as I have always been able to do with Outlook.

My family needs the calendar on the fridge to see where everybody is supposed to be. I have synched Outlook and google calendar and can use Outlook to print the calendar, but then why not just use Outlook Calendar?

Can my Google Calendar week be printed on one page? 8.5×11 or A4?

Chris

Dear Chris,

I also use the calendar in Outlook and have it synched with my Google calendar, so I was intrigued when I read your question. I don’t print my calendars very often (I also have it on my iPad so my calendar goes with me pretty much everywhere) but I’m sure that a lot of my readers do print theirs.

My first step was to go to my google calendar at www.google.com/calendar

Near the top of my calendar page, are buttons that allow me to select the view I want to use. The available options are:
Day
Week
Month
4 Days
Agenda

Since you wanted to print a weekly calendar, I clicked on the “Week” button.

To the right of these buttons is a small button with a picture of a printer on it. Click on this print button to bring up a preview of what a printed page will look like, and some options to change the way it will look when printed.

The first option is named, “Print Range:” this allows you to select the days that are displayed in your week. You can specify any date to start your week, and you can also choose to print more than one week if you want.

The second option is for “Font size” You have seven font size options so you can select the one that works best for the number of things you have on your calendar as well as the size you are comfortable reading.

The “Orientation” option allows you to select either portrait or landscape.

You can put a check mark in front of “Black and white” if you don’t want use color ink in your calendar printout.

When you have everything set the way you want it, click the “Print” button at the bottom of the page, and your calendar will print out and be ready for the fridge.

I hope this helps your family stay on schedule!

I had not heard of Meebo, so I did a little bit of looking around, and it appears that Meebo is a toolbar that installs as an add-on to your browser and then displays advertisements.

I found a lot of people on the internet who wanted to get rid of this toolbar.

Since Meebo is an ad-on to your web browser, and not a complete program, you can’t get rid of it in the Control Panel like you can most other programs.

Instead, you must open your web browser and remove meebo in the add-on settings.

You didn’t mention what web browser you are using, so I will give you directions for some of the most common ones.

If you are using Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on the “Tools” icon. It looks like a small gear located just under the red X that you click to close the window.
3. In the drop down menu under “Tools” click on “Manage Add-ons”.
4. Make sure you have “Toolbars and Extensions” highlighted on the left and scroll down the list of add-ons until you find Meebo.
5. When you find Meebo, click on it once, then click the “Disable” button in the lower right corner of the dialog box.

If you are using Google Chrome:

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click on the “Customize” icon. It looks like a small wrench located just under the red X that you click to close the window.
3. Point to “Tools” in the menu, then click on “Extensions”.
4. Find Meebo in the list of extensions, and click the “Uninstall” link below it.

If you are using Firefox:

1. Open Firefox.
2. Click on “Tools” in the menu bar, then click on “Add-ons.
3. Look through the list of either “Extensions” or “Plugins” to find Meebo, then click the “Disable” button to turn it off.

Do you know of a safe website to obtain grocery store coupons?

I have looked at several, but it seems that they require you to download some kind of software of tool bar.

Is this safe? Barbi

Dear Barbi,

I don’t know of any safe websites that have grocery store coupons. Hopefully, someone will have a good site that they would like to share in a comment.

What I do want to tell you, is to beware of scams and spyware downloads when searching for the word “coupons”. It seems to be a word that people search for a lot, and therefore it is a word that scammers use to attract their unsuspecting victims.

Many of the toolbars you can download that are supposed to help you, really just do things like display advertisements, or even redirect your browser to advertisers web pages.

I would search online for coupon user groups, and find out what those people are using to obtain grocery store coupons.

Hi Computer Lady,

The <Home> key and the arrow keys stopped working in Gmail. The PgUp and PgDn keys still work.

What caused this to happen? Can I fix it?

Please help. I hope you answer this question. I could not find the answer when I looked at your archives.

Dear S M,

I had noticed that the arrow keys didn’t work for me, but hadn’t thought too much about it until I got your email message. After reading your message, I did a little investigating, and here is what I found.

This is an issue that Google is aware of, and they are working on. In fact, as I was writing this answer, the arrow keys began to work in my Gmail page. It appears that they have to apply this fix to individual accounts, so it may take days for every email account to get fixed.

If you want to learn more about the problem, Google has information on their website at:
