Reading your reply made me wonder if I am backing up everything? I use Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron notebook. To backup my data, weekly I just copy the “Libraries” onto a USB flash drive. Then monthly I do a Windows 7 image backup to a Segate external drive. Is there a chance of data being somewhere other than in the folders in the “Libraries” folders?
Twice I have had computer problems and after copying my data to a USB flash drive, I re-installed my computer from the last image backup. Then deleted all the data in the folders, and copied the folders back form the USB flash drive. I don’t seem to have lost anything. But now you have me wondering!

so I have a reasonable idea of the many possibilities.

I will address the wallpaper issue with a view on
dual- or multi-monitor programs, but there are many solutions to get a different wallpaper on each monitor.

The other option is to use dual monitor wallpaper.
Just do a search using those terms.There are lots of sites.
Alernatively ,you can create your own by using 2 different images and joining them.

I may be wrong, but Symantec would not out source your call to iYogi, or any other outside company. And if you purchased your Symantec/Norton AntiVirus product, you already have a support contract with Symantec, you do not need anything else.
It sounds like the above person may have a virus or something that routed them to a phony Symantec/Norton site. They need to do a good scan of their computer with something like the Windows Defender Offline, to see if there is an infection. Or take it to someone like the “Computer Lady” to have it really checked out.
I am always uneasy about giving someone access to my computer. There is just too much that can go wrong.

There is also a tiny chance from within Word itself. There is an Option to create a .BAK “backup” copy of the file when you open the file. So like for a copy of the filename with suffix .BAK instead of .DOC or .DOCX.

You can use the Windows File Search tool found in the upper right corner of Windows Explorer. Personally, I prefer using a tool called “Everything” from Void tools that I feel does a better job of file name searches.

Elizabeth is right (of course :) ) that beeps and no bootup would indicate some hardware problem,
but even a disconnected mouse or keyboard will give you that too.

Since you didn’t mention if your son sees anything on his screen at all ,it’s possible that it could be more serious.

Most likely he won’t know which make or version of the BIOS on his computer ,but if he can access the BIOS at all ,that would eliminate some things like video and RAM as being the cause.

Failing that ,you might be able to help by getting info on the computer model and doing an online check
at the manufacturer’s website for specs ,manuals and BIOS info.

The rest of Elizabeth’s answer applies ,especially the anti-static precautions ,even if he were to re-seat all connectors to make sure that those aren’t the cause of the problem.

While it may well be as Elizabeth describes that the CD/DVD drive has had its best time, there are other reasons why nothing happens.
With all the security updates from Microsoft as well as your security software, I have found that “Autorun’ no longer works when you insert a CD or DVD.
(Unless you can unset CD/DVD drives from being scanned)

Instead ,open My Computer and select the CD/DVD drive
or -r-click the drive and select Explore.
Then look for the Setup or install exe and execute it.

If that doesn’t work you may well have a bad drive and therefor all of Elizabeth’s answer would be applicable.

There is still the possibility of a bad cable connection or dirty lens or defective laser in the CD/DVD drive.There are lens cleaners ,but a defective laser requires replacement of the drive.
