How To Adjust Laptop Brightness

Dear Computer Lady,

Elizabeth, I have been a pc person since they came out, now I bought a laptop. Its a HP Pavilion g7-1219wm notebook pc.

The problem I’m having is certain web pages the letters blend in with the background & I can’t read them.

Is this something unique to laptops or is there a setting I can change?? Example is “Sears” & the tv section, just one of many.

I would appreciate it if you can help me with my computer, Thanks, Dianne Read More…

How To Replace Motherboard CMOS Battery

Dear Computer Lady,

How do I safely remove the memory battery from a motherboard?

I took apart 2 junk computers and the tab that covers the battery broke when I removed it both times.

Is there a safe way to take out a dead memory battery and install a new one? I’ve got a 386 PC that I suspect needs a new memory battery.

How To Keep Email Addresses Private

Dear Computer Lady,

Your newsletter is very informative, I’ve been receiving it for a while now.  I’m fairly new to computers.  I hope you can help me with my computer.

How can I send the same email to several people while keeping their personal email addresses private? When sending them, I just insert the first names of the individuals, but when they receive the mail, their addresses are listed along with their first name.

Thanks, Gail  Read More…

How Do I Learn to Master My Computer

Dear Computer Lady,

Hello- I am hoping you can suggest a step-by-step book/tutorial/etc to systematically teach me how to master the computer (is that even possible?!!).

I find myself at a crossroads where I see my lack of knowledge would put me in a very precarious position if I continue to put more and more of my daily life and affairs on-line without a much fuller understanding of terms, processes and systems that the computer faces me with.

I really appreciate all the questions you answer and I have learned very much from you but I feel I need to fill in lots of knowledge gaps. If you have something available I would be very interested. If not, I would greatly appreciate your recommendations.

I currently use a Dell Vostro with Vista home basic (am not against upgrading to 7)and use IE. I’m sure my computer could be a lot more useful to me than it is but I’d like to know what I’m doing rather than leap blindly into the unknown.

Many thanks!! Laurie Read More…

How To Access Data on Old Hard Drives

Hi Elizabeth;

A friend in England told me about boxes that a person can put a hard drive in and plug them into a computer’s USB port. Do you know the proper name of these gadgets? Are they also sold in North America? I have a box of old hard drives that I’d love to check out and discover what’s on them. It would also be nice to reuse them to store data on.

Sincerely,
