Dear Computer Lady.

I am a 75 yr old lady living in my “rusty” age! I learned the computer all on my own by trial and error over the past 6 years. I do not know how I managed before a friend turned me on to your site.

Could you explain to me what a clipboard is and does?

Thank you, Freddie

Dear Freddie,

The clipboard is a part of your computer’s operating system that you don’t normally see, but it has a valuable function when you are using your computer.

Let’s say that your friend has sent you her new mailing address in an e-mail message and you want to use that address in a letter that you are typing. You could print the e-mail out and then re-type the address in the letter, but the computer has a much easier way.

Using your mouse, you can highlight the address (Just point to the beginning of the address and hold down the left mouse button then drag the mouse to the end of the address. The whole thing will have a blue background and we would say it is highlighted.) and then click on “Edit” in the menu bar, then click “Copy”. This copies the address to the clipboard, which is just a storage place in your computer’s memory.

Once the address is on the clipboard, you can paste it anywhere on your computer that you would like. Go to your letter that you are typing, click once where you want the address to go, and click “Edit” then “Paste” and the address will come from the clipboard to your letter.

One other thing about the clipboard is that it will keep the information you put on it and you can paste it over and over again until you replace the information by copying something new.

Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,

I need to know how to copy more than one thing to clipboard without losing the previously copied item.

For example, when I am surfing the net I would like to be able to copy addresses to then be printed out all at once or enclosed in an email. These are not addresses that I would want in my favorites as I use that mainly for sites I know I’ll be returning to. These are temporary address such as for freebie/sample sign ups that I want to be able to share with others.

I would greatly appreciate your help, Sincerely, Denise

Dear Denise,

Unfortunately the Windows clipboard is limited to only one clip at a time. When you copy something, it stays on the clipboard until you copy something else.

There are, however, clipboard extender programs available that will do what you want and a whole lot more.

I use a great program called ClipMate, in fact, I can’t imagine writing this newsletter without it.

ClipMate works with the Windows clipboard, making it a true power tool.

ClipMate remembers every piece of data (both text and graphics) that you cut or copy. Once your data is in ClipMate, you can select an item and it is automatically placed back on the clipboard or directly into the application you were using.

You can view, print, edit, reformat, convert to upper/lower case, search, rename, and reorder clip items. You can remove those irritating e-mail >> symbols, and remove line breaks from the e- mail program as well. There is even a built-in spell checker.

You can create an unlimited number of folders inside the ClipMate program to store your data. For example, you can use a “InBox” collection as a catch-all, and create “Safe” collections for topics like Tips n Tricks, Frequently Used Letter Closings, Clip Art, Hot Internet URLS, Project Research, or whatever you wish.

ClipMate’s exclusive PowerPaste allows you to rapidly paste large amounts of data with ease, and its screen capture feature will allow you to take snapshots of any area of your screen that you specify.

With ClipMate as your Windows companion, you will take the familiar underpowered clipboard and turn it into an unexpectedly powerful time saver.

ClipMate costs $34.95. Check it out at:

ClipMate™ Clipboard Extender for Windows

Works in Windows 95,98, 2000, ME, XP

http://tinyurl.com/9vejb

Since we recently talked about copy and paste in this newsletter, I thought I would tell you about one of the most used programs on my computer. In fact, I would not be anywhere near as productive if I did not have this program on my computer.

ClipMate saves time and makes me more productive by adding clipboard functions that the Windows clipboard leaves out. ClipMate has functions to edit, re-format, and manage your clipboard data. I use it every week to format my articles into 64 character lines. It can also print, re-format, and even spell-check. I can copy words or e-mail addresses one at a time, and then use clipmate to combine them and paste the list all at once. I can add any text I want to each item as well as remove things from a clip. ClipMate is great at removing the greater than marks (>>>) from forwarded e-mail messages.

ClipMate holds THOUSANDS of “clips” for days, weeks, even years if you need it to. And you can organize, edit, re-format, print, combine, search, and manage your data. I have several folders in clipmate that hold information for future articles, HTML code that I use often, and newsletter issues. You can even encrypt sensitive information like credit card numbers.

ClipMate comes in either a downloadable version, or you can order it on CD for only $29.95 at:

Download it here
