I want to delete multiple “favorites” without going back to desktop after each one.

Arlene

__–__

Dear Arlene,

Thank you for your question!

Since you have not specified what version of Windows you are using or what browser you are using, I am going to have to guess that you are using Internet Explorer.

If you are using Windows Vista, or Windows 7, you can quickly access and delete multiple favorites using these directions:

1. Click on “Start”, then click on your user name at the top of the right start menu column. This will open your, “User” folder.

2. In your user folder, you will see a folder named, Favorites. Double click on it to open it.

3. From this window, you can select one or more favorites and delete them. You can also organize them into folders, or double click on any favorite to open it.

I hope this answers your question.

Dear Computer Lady,

I really like your website and your newsletter. I have vista home premium on a HP desktop and using Internet Explorer 8 . When I click on favorites it tells me it is at a location that is unavailable. I had favorites when I purchased this in may but about 4 weeks ago they disappeared. i have them in a folder but it will not import them . i would appreciate any help you may have.

Thanks for the great work, Nancy

Dear Nancy,

Thank you for your question. Based on the information that you have given me, I am guessing that somehow about 4 weeks ago, you accidentally moved your favorites folder and now Internet Explorer cannot find it.

First, we will need to check and see if my theory is right. Click on the “Start Orb” and then click on your user name located at the top of the right hand column.

You will see a list of folders. This list should include a “Favorites” folder. If not, we have found the reason for your problem.

If the “Favorites” folder is not where it should be, you will have to do a little bit of searching to find it, and then put it back where it belongs. Quite often, people accidentally move a file or folder by dragging it over another folder. I have done this numerous times myself. You will probably be able to find your favorites folder by opening a few of the folders in your user account.

Once you find your favorites folder, you can drag it from its current location, back into your user folder.

Dear Computer Lady,

I am questioning you as to how to back up my “Favorites” I’ve never done it even though I lost everything when my hard drive crashed a few months ago. I now have an HP laptop with XP and should learn how to back up the favorites. I do backup my WORD and EXCEL files on CD, but not sure if that’s also the way to back up the favorites. I look forward to your free newsletter every week.

Richard in Rhode Island

Dear Richard,

It is quite easy to backup your favorites. Since you didn’t mention what version of Internet Explorer you are using, I am going to give you directions for version 6 first, and then for version 7.

For this example, we are going to save your favorites to a USB drive, also known as a data stick, or thumb drive. The first step in both methods, is to put your data stick in a USB port on your computer, then open up “My Computer” and you should see your data stick listed as a removable device. Make a note of the drive letter windows has assigned to the data stick, and close “My Computer”.

To Backup your Favorites in Internet Explorer 6, follow these directions:

1. Open Internet Explorer. Click on “File” in the menu bar, then click on “Import and Export…”

2. The Import/Export Wizard window will open. On the first page, click “Next”.

3. On the second page of the wizard, click on “Export Favorites” and then click “Next”.

4. On the third page of the wizard, click on the favorites folder to backup all your favorites, and click “Next”.

5. On the fourth page of the wizard, click on “Export to a file or address”, and then click on the “Browse” button.

6. In the browse window that appears, find the section at the very top of the window that says “Save in” and click on the down arrow to view the list of locations. Find your removable disk, and click on it to select it, then click on the “Save” button.

7. This will take you back to the fourth page of the wizard. Now all you have to do is click on “Next” and then in the last window of the wizard, click on “Finish”.

Your favorites will now be saved on your removable drive.

If you have upgraded to Internet Explorer 7, and are using Windows XP, use these directions:

Dear DG,

You can put your Internet Explorer favorites in alphabetical order in Windows XP the same way you can in Windows 98 and ME.

Open Internet Explorer.

Click on “Favorites” in the menu bar.

When your list of favorites drops down from the menu bar, right click on any one of the shortcuts and then click “Sort by Name”.

Be sure you use the menu bar, which is at the very top of your Internet Explorer window. It contains the following menus: File Edit View Favorites Tools Help. This will not work if you use Favorites in the toolbar, however, the changes you make in the menu bar will be reflected in the toolbar menu.

I really look forward to your newsletter and learn something valuable from each edition.

I recently purchased a new computer (Dell) with XP Home edition. Is there a way to alphabetize Favorites? I had finally found how to do it with Win. 98….but cannot do it on XP. It makes it much harder to find a listing when I have to go through everything.

Dear Marviene,

I get this question a lot. The problem is that you can see your favorites listed in many places, but you can only alphabetize them in one location.

This also works in earlier versions of windows, so if you have Windows 98 or ME, you can use these directions as well.

The menu bar, is the bar across the top of each window that usually starts with items like “File”, “Edit”, “View” and “Insert”.

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click on “Favorites” in the menu bar. (This will not work if you use Favorites in the toolbar.)

3. When your list of favorites drops down from the menu bar, right click on any one of the shortcuts and then click “Sort by Name”.
