Dear Computer Lady,

A cousin sent me a CD that has photos on them, and told me it was a jpg file. I inserted the CD into my computer (Windows ME) and nothing happens.

What should I do to see the photos?

Dear Rex,

When you insert a CD into your CD-ROM drive, it will automatically start up only if it has an autorun file on the disk.

Since it appears your CD doesn’t have an autorun file, you will have to bring up the pictures yourself.

1. Put the CD in your computer.

2. Double click on “My Computer” on your desktop to open it. If you have Windows XP, click on “Start” and then on “My Computer”.

3. In the “My Computer” window, you will need to decide which drive has your CD ROM. Usually, it will be the D drive, but it might be a different letter. You can usually tell a CD-ROM drive because the icon has a round CD on top of the drive icon. Double click on the CD-ROM drive.

4. If you didn’t get the right drive the first time, go ahead and try another drive.

5. You should now have a window for your CD. It will either have files listed, or one or more folders. The files can be opened by double clicking on them, the folders can be opened the same way, then double click on the image files inside the folders.

If you have my free software pick, Irfanview, you can double click on the first image file, then view all the pictures in a folder by pressing the spacebar each time you want to advance to a new photo.

Dear Computer Lady,

For some reason my internet explorer is saving pictures as untitled.bmp instead of in .jpg format. I tried to change it to .jpg but when I click on save as type, .bmp is the only option available. How can I fix this?

Dear Dave,

This is the result of a bug in Internet Explorer. The first thing to do, is clean out your temporary internet files.

Open Internet Explorer and click on “Tools” then “Internet Options”. On the general tab, click the button that says “Delete Files” and then click “OK” when it has finished. Sometimes this will take a few minutes to delete all the files.

Once you have done that, close Internet Explorer and re-boot your computer.

Now, go to Windows update http://www.windowsupdate.com and make sure you have all the latest updates.

This should fix your problem.

Dear Computer Lady,

A friend introduced me to your site…I love it and I thank you.

How would I reduce a JPG photo that was taken by some else and downloaded on a CD for me? I have reduced it but I can not download the reduce one that I copied to my document folder.

Arax in Boca Raton, FL USA

Dear Arax,

How you reduce a jpg photo in size depends on the software program you are using to work with your pictures. Since my favorite photo program Irfanview, is free, I will give you directions using that program.

If you don’t have Irfanview installed on your computer, you can read about it, and download it on their website at Irfanview.com

When you have Irfanview installed on your computer, open your picture in Irfanview. You can do this using the “File” and “Open” commands in the menu bar.

When you have the picture open, click on “Image” in the menu bar, and then click on “Resize/Resample”. This will bring up a small window with some options to chose from.

In the Resize/Resample image window, you will be able to chose from several options. You can set a new size by typing in the pixel size, make the new picture a percentage of the original, or select some standard sizes.

I usually like to use the button on the upper right hand side of the window that says “Half” You can click on that button once or twice and get the picture as small as you would like. Once done, click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window and you will see your image in its new size.

If you like the size of your new image, you can save it. Don’t forget this step, because if you close the image without saving, you will revert back to the original large size image. Just click on “File” and “Save”.

I always give the smaller image a new file name so that I don’t lose the original.
