Hi and thanks for the great newsletter. My question is this:

I had, had my browser windows maximized, so that every time I opened one, it was maximized without having to click on the maximize button.

For some reason, now they won’t do that and I can’t figure out what I changed to make it do that. They are all smaller now and I have to hit the max. button or increase with the arrows.

Can you help? Thanks, Susan

__–__

Dear Susan,

Your problem seems to be a fairly common one, and there is no official fix for this problem.

What I do have for you is a little trick that seems to work most of the time.

Open your browser, maximize it so that the window is the way you want it, then hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you close the window.

Repeat this process several times until the browser opens in the maximized position. It might take just a few times, but it might take a lot of times.

This trick almost always works.

Dear computer lady,

My question is a simple one (I hope).

When you download updates and install them, can you (or should you) eventually delete them if you go into the add/remove programs?

I have so many updates on my laptop and not much memory left and I was wondering how I could save space.

Dear Holly,

This is a good question, and one that people ask me quite frequently.

The Windows updates that Microsoft puts out are individual updates, and newer ones do not contain the updates that came before it. That means that if you were to remove the older ones, the protection or feature contained in those older updates would also be removed and you might possibly leave yourself exposed to a threat of some kind.

The reason the updates are listed in Add/Remove programs is so that you can remove an update that ends up causing you problems.

I know this doesn’t help your memory problem, but it will prevent you from removing updates that are working to keep your computer secure.

I LOVE your newsletter. I’m USUALLY able to figure out things for myself, but this time, NO LUCK.

In trying to help someone else, I have made everything on my desktop LARGE!!! When I right click on the desktop and click the “PROPERTIES” tab, I can’t get down to the bottom of the page to click “APPLY” to make the “screen area” slide thing stay in place! I’ve tried re sizing that screen, but no luck. I can move it left and right and down from the bottom, but I can’t get to the bottom of the screen.

I stayed up until 2 a.m. trying to figure this out.

Joslynn

Dear Joslynn,

This will help.

Open the desktop properties window and make your changes. When you are ready to click the apply button, do the following:

Press the Alt key located to the left of the spacebar, then press the spacebar and then press the letter M.

Now, use your arrow keys to move the window around on your screen. When you have it so you can see the “Apply” button, press the Enter key.

Dear Computer Lady,

I just wanted to write to you, we have a windows 98 second edition computer.

It was previously used for a business. We wanted to erase the entire hard drive. We went through dos and hit c:\format

and yes we formatted the drive.

Now it will not let us reinstall windows 98 saying there is an invalid system disk.

We have a diskette drive and a cd r/rw too. The system disk is on cd.

What can we do to get my pc up and running again? Thanks

Holly

Dear Holly,

You will need a Windows 98 boot floppy disk.

Once you have the disk, put the Windows 98, CD in the CD-ROM drive and the floppy disk in the floppy drive.

The computer should boot to the floppy disk and give you several options. Choose the enable CD-ROM access option and let it finish booting.

When it gets to the A: prompt, look at the line above, it will tell you the drive letter of the CD-ROM. If the letter is E: for example, you would type:

E:\setup

and press enter. This should start the Windows Setup from the CD-ROM.
